Installing Under-Cabinet Kitchen Lighting: A No-Frills Guide

Our kitchen counters were lit by one overhead fixture. Everything that happened on the counter — chopping, reading labels, checking the color of cooked meat — happened in partial shadow. Under-cabinet lights fixed all of it for $38.

The Setup

I have three runs of upper cabinets: left of the sink (4 ft), right of the sink (3 ft), and the cabinet run on the opposite wall (5 ft). Total: 12 feet of under-cabinet coverage needed. I bought two 6-foot linkable LED strip sets at 3000K warm white, $19 each.

The Outlet Trick

There was an existing outlet inside my upper right cabinet from a previous owner who'd used it for a cabinet light. I plugged a small power strip into it and ran all three strip sections back to that strip — left run with an extension cord through the cabinet wall, right run direct, opposite wall run across the back of the cabinets where they meet at the corner. One cord exits through the cabinet to the wall outlet. From the outside, it's invisible.

The Result

The counter is fully lit. I can see every cutting board. I caught a stain on a white dish that the overhead would never have revealed. My food photos look dramatically better. All for $38 and one Saturday afternoon.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you install under-cabinet lighting without an electrician?

Plug-in LED strip lights are the easiest approach — they use adhesive backing to stick to the underside of cabinets and plug into standard outlets. For a clean installation, run an extension cord or power strip inside one cabinet (with a small hole drilled for the cord to enter the cabinet from the wall outlet). All strips then plug into the power strip inside the cabinet, and only one cord exits to the wall outlet.

What is the best under-cabinet lighting for a kitchen?

LED strip lights offer the most flexibility and even coverage. Choose strips rated 3000K–3500K for the warmest but functional counter light. Linkable strips are ideal so multiple runs connect to one power source. For a premium look, recessed linear LED fixtures mounted inside a valence offer the cleanest appearance but require more installation work and a higher budget.

How much does under-cabinet lighting cost to install?

Plug-in LED strip lights run $15–$40 for a standard kitchen's worth of strips. Professional hard-wired installation adds $150–$300 for an electrician. Plug-in with a hidden power strip costs $25–$50 total including the strips and power strip. Hardwired with new circuits costs $300–$600 including fixtures and labor. The plug-in approach delivers 90% of the visual result at 10% of the cost.
