The mudroom is not the place to spend money on statement fixtures. It is the place to spend money on practical ones.
Our mudroom is a narrow back hall connecting the kitchen to the rear porch. It takes the most abuse of any room in the house — wet boots, muddy dogs, groceries in paper bags. The lighting needs to be bright enough to function and robust enough to survive.
We chose a simple flush-mount with a sealed glass globe, in an antique bronze finish that reads as period-appropriate without being precious about it. Fully enclosed, which means it doesn't collect insects. Dimmable, which we've never used because the mudroom always needs full light.
The detail I'm glad I didn't skip: a second switch at the back door, so we can turn the light on from outside before we enter. This seems obvious in retrospect. It wasn't obvious at design time.
Hook placement is a lighting-adjacent decision I'll mention: our hooks are mounted at three heights — 72 inches for adult coats, 48 inches for bags, 30 inches for small items. The light is positioned to illuminate all three levels without harsh shadows.
Our setup: a ceiling light fixture on a motion sensor for arrivals, plus a pair of lower wall sconces for when we're using the space. Both on separate switches.
Sarah at The Kinney Home covered mudroom chaos after school pickup — her approach to functional lighting in a high-traffic space is exactly the problem I was solving.
Function First, But Not Ugly
A mudroom is a working entry, so the light has to be bright and durable before it's pretty — a solid overhead on a switch by the door, warm enough that the space still feels like part of the home. We added a small task light at the bench so finding keys and sorting bags doesn't happen in shadow.
Fixtures That Survive Real Life
We chose simple, wipeable fixtures in tough finishes that shrug off humidity, dirt, and the occasional knock. Carrying a warm bulb temperature through from the adjacent entry lighting kept the mudroom from feeling like a utility closet bolted onto a nice house.
